Lake Skadar National Park

Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, and most visitors see it from a boat past marsh shores, island monasteries and old fortresses. Birdwatching is best in spring and autumn.

Lake Skadar National Park protects the largest lake in the Balkans, which lies on the border between Montenegro and Albania. The lake is shallow, so reed beds and marsh shores make up much of what you see from the water. Small villages sit along the edges of the water, and monasteries and fortresses stand on islands and headlands.

Most visitors come for boat trips to the island monasteries, stops in the wine villages and birdwatching, which is strongest in spring and autumn when migrating birds pass through. Summer is hot and busier on the water, so the cooler months suit a slower pace. Many trips start from Podgorica or the Adriatic coast. A full day covers the main boat route, and two or three days leave room for walks and bike rides on the shore roads.
