    Mali

Mali is a landlocked West African country where travelers go for the earthen Great Mosque of Djenné, the old trading city of Timbuktu and the Dogon villages on the Bandiagara Escarpment.

Mali is a large landlocked country in West Africa, with Bamako as its capital and largest city in the south. Most of the country lies in the Sahara, while most people live in the south, where the Niger and Senegal rivers flow. Mali borders seven countries, so overland travel usually means crossing one of them.

Timbuktu and Djenné were centers of trade and Islamic learning in the Mali Empire, which reached its height in the 14th century under Mansa Musa. Travelers go for these towns, the Dogon villages on the Bandiagara Escarpment and the Inner Niger Delta, which floods when the Niger rises in the rainy season, from late April to early October in the south. Security is the main thing to check. Insecurity in the north and center includes jihadist attacks, ethnic militia violence and kidnappings, and a fuel blockade since 2025 has caused shortages in Bamako. The U.S. Embassy has advised American citizens to leave Mali immediately, so check current travel advice before you plan anything.

Five things to know before Mali

    1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of Mali. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

    2. Check the US advisory as well

The US State Department rates Mali Level 4, do not travel. Mali has also applied reciprocal entry restrictions to US citizens since January 2026.

    3. Apply for the Mali visa online before you fly

The UK says the application and payment process is fully online through Mali's foreign ministry website. Rules have changed at short notice, so avoid third-party visa sites. Visas and entry

    4. Carry a yellow fever certificate

Mali requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all arriving travelers aged nine months and over.

    5. Read your insurance policy before you book

Look for the clause on government travel advice. Specialist cover for high-risk areas exists but is expensive and often excludes the risks that matter most. Travel insurance
