Timbuktu is a city in northern Mali, on the southern edge of the Sahara and a short distance from the Niger River. For centuries it was a trading hub for salt, gold and books, and a center of Islamic learning in West Africa. Its old quarter is built from earthen mud brick, and its three great mosques, Djinguereber, Sankore and Sidi Yahia, are the best-known landmarks. The city also holds manuscript collections from the medieval and early modern periods, which draw scholars and history readers.

Most sights are in the old town, and a few days is enough for the main monuments. The cooler months, roughly November to February, are the most comfortable time to visit, when daytime heat is lower. Travel to and within northern Mali is limited and can change quickly, so check your government's current travel advice and speak with a specialist operator before you book anything.
