Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania, in the southeast of the country where the Vilnia and Neris rivers meet. Go for the Old Town, one of Europe's largest and best-preserved, where Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and classical buildings stand side by side. The city has about 40 Catholic churches, along with Orthodox churches, a Great Synagogue and Lutheran and Reformed churches. Gediminas Tower on Gediminas Hill is the city's symbol and has some of the best views over the Old Town.

Plan two days for the Old Town, Gediminas Hill and Užupis, walking at an easy pace. Add a day for museums, Jewish history or a day trip into the surrounding Vilnius District. Summers are warm, with outdoor cafés and restaurants busy in the daytime and periods above 30 °C in July and August. Winters can be very cold, with temperatures below −25 °C about every other year, and the lakes around the city are usually frozen from December to March.

Vilnius FAQ

How many days do you need in Vilnius?

Two days cover the Old Town, Gediminas' Tower, the Palace of the Grand Dukes, Užupis and one museum. Add a third day for Trakai by train, or for a second museum day if the weather is poor.

Is Vilnius worth visiting?

Yes, for a compact Old Town that UNESCO describes as a medieval foundation with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, plus museums on Lithuanian history. It suits travelers who like walkable cities and layered history over big-ticket attractions.

How do you get from Vilnius airport to the center?

Go Vilnius lists a train to the main station in about 7 minutes, buses 1, 2, 3G and 88, and a taxi stand outside arrivals. Road transfer takes about 15 minutes. Use a taxi app to see the fare first.

Is the Vilnius Pass worth it?

Only if you plan several paid museums and a tour inside its 24, 48 or 72 hours. For one or two sights, single tickets and a day transit ticket cost less. The full sums are in the pass guide.

Is Vilnius safe for tourists?

FCDO notes petty crime such as pickpocketing and says drinks have been spiked in Vilnius, so keep valuables close and watch your glass. Emergency number 112 connects to English-speaking operators, according to Go Vilnius.
