Lithuania lies along the Baltic's eastern edge, with Latvia, Belarus, Poland and Kaliningrad, Russia's exclave, as neighbors. Vilnius, the capital, has an Old Town listed by UNESCO, and the Curonian Spit, a narrow sand peninsula that screens the coast, is listed too. Lithuanian is the official language, but you will also hear Polish and Russian, mostly around Vilnius.
Trips usually center on Vilnius, Klaipėda and Kaunas, with add-ons to the seaside resorts of Neringa and Palanga or the spa towns of Druskininkai and Birštonas. Roughly a third of the land is woodland, and birders head to the Nemunas Delta Regional Park and Žuvintas biosphere reserve. July in Vilnius averages about 17 °C, and summer also brings most of the rain. Winter is cold, with January averages near −6 °C in Vilnius and snow possible from October to April.
Five things to know before Lithuania
- Expect EES registration at your first Schengen border
The UK government says visitors may register fingerprints and a photo at a booth on first entry, at no cost, and that EES can add waiting time on arrival and departure. Allow extra time at the airport when you leave. EES explained
- Check the rules for your passport
Lithuania follows Schengen rules: UK passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, and the passport must be under 10 years old with 3 months left after departure. Other passports differ, so check yours. Visa checker
- Carry your passport toward Poland
Poland has notified temporary border checks on its land border with Lithuania from 2 October 2026 to 30 March 2027. Keep ID to hand on any train, coach or car trip south from Kaunas. Kaunas
- Add the Vilnius city tax to every quote
Vilnius charges EUR 2 per person per night, billed separately from the room rate, with exemptions for under-18s and stays of a month or more. Vilnius
- Read the FCDO notes before heading east
The UK government has separate advice on arriving from Belarus or Russia, including Kaliningrad, and notes that the Lithuanian half of the Curonian Spit ends at the Russian border. Read it before any overland trip. FCDO entry requirements

Before you go to Lithuania
Lithuania FAQ
Do I need a visa for Lithuania?
Not for short stays on a UK passport: up to 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area, according to the UK government. Rules differ by passport, so use the visa checker, and expect EES registration at your first Schengen border.
How many days do I need in Lithuania?
Two days cover Vilnius, and Kaunas works as one long day from the capital or as a night. Three or four days fit both cities without rushing.
Can I visit Kaunas as a day trip from Vilnius?
Yes. Trains and coaches run between the two cities, and the Kaunas stations sit about 15 minutes’ walk from the center. Stay a night if you want Pažaislis or the Ninth Fort.
Can I pay by card in Lithuania?
Cards and phones work on Kaunas buses and trolleybuses, and the city plans to end cash sales on board from 1 December 2026. Carry a little cash for small purchases.
Can I cross into Belarus or Kaliningrad from Lithuania?
The UK government publishes separate notes on arriving from Belarus or Russia, including Kaliningrad, and on Belarus border closures. Read its Lithuania entry requirements and the Belarus and Russia advice before planning any overland trip.
