Vieste is the easternmost town on the Gargano promontory, in Foggia province in Apulia. The whole municipality lies inside Gargano National Park, so forest trails are close to the sea. The old town sits on a small rocky peninsula with three bays, with a Swabian castle on the cliffs above the water and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, an Apulian Romanesque church. Pizzomunno, a white limestone sea stack about 25 metres high, is the town's best-known landmark.
The coast has sandy beaches, including the stretch south of Pizzomunno and the long San Lorenzo beach to the west, which still has many free beaches. Grottoes and arches carved by sea and wind line the shore, and many can only be reached by boat. Inland, Foresta Umbra is a beech forest with trekking routes and wildlife such as roe deer and owls. Summer is the peak season, from June to September, and much of the tourist activity slows down outside these months.
