Peschici is a seaside town in Foggia province, on the north-eastern coast of the Gargano promontory in Apulia, southeast Italy. Its old town sits on a karst spur more than 100 metres above the sea, inside Gargano National Park. White houses climb a tangle of narrow lanes, stairways and arches. The Byzantine-era castle on the highest rocky spur was first built around 970, rebuilt in the 13th century under Frederick II, and is now restored and open to visitors.

The beaches are the main reason to visit. Marina di Peschici is a long strip of very fine sand, about 700 m, and smaller coves are reached by footbridge, on foot, or only by sea. The coast faces north, so for much of spring and summer you can watch the sun come up and go down over the water. The beaches are spread along the coast, so plan on a car or taxi to move between them. A car is the easiest way to reach the town. Otherwise, take the local railway from San Severo, then a bus or taxi; the station is Peschici Calenella, which is actually in Vico del Gargano. July and August are the warmest months, with averages near 27 °C.

Peschici in five

  1. Rent a car before you arriveThere is no practical rail link to Peschici itself, and beaches and the forest are spread out. A car lets you reach coves, Vieste and the Foresta Umbra, though summer traffic and parking are slow.
  2. Walk down to the old town and the trabuccoThe old center sits on a headland, and the traditional fishing platform (trabucco) stands below it. Wear shoes with grip on the steep lanes and avoid midday heat.
  3. Book boat trips to coves and the Tremiti IslandsIn season, boats run from Gargano ports to sea caves and the Tremiti Islands. Check operators and timetables, and ask about cancellation if the sea is rough.
  4. Choose June or September for beachesJuly and August are busy and expensive, and many places close from late autumn to spring. Check opening dates before you book outside summer.Best time to visit Italy

Peschici FAQ

Is Peschici worth visiting?

Yes if you want a quieter Adriatic beach village with a photogenic old town. It is not a sightseeing city, so it suits beach and boat days with a few road trips.

How do you get to Peschici?

By car from Bari or Foggia, which takes about 2.5–3 hours from Bari. Buses exist but are slow, and trains do not reach the village. Plan for a drive.

Do you need a car in Peschici?

Yes for most trips. The old town is walkable, but beaches, the Foresta Umbra and other towns need a car. Parking in summer fills early.

When is the best time to visit Peschici?

June and September for warm sea and fewer crowds. July and August are the peak, and many places close from late autumn to spring.

Is Peschici or Vieste better?

Peschici is smaller and calmer, Vieste is larger and busier with more restaurants and nightlife. Many visitors base in one and visit the other for a day.
