Pescara is a seaside city on Italy's Adriatic coast and the largest city in Abruzzo, a region in central-eastern Italy. A wide sandy beach runs beside the seafront promenade, and the Pescara River reaches the sea here, beside a working fishing port. Brodetto, a Pescara-style fish stew, is the classic local dish. The writer Gabriele D'Annunzio was born in the city.

The Trabocchi Coast lies south of the city, between Ortona and Vasto. Its wooden fishing platforms, called trabocchi, stand over the rocks, and fishermen once used them to lower nets into the sea. Inland, the Gran Sasso and Majella massifs can be reached by car, so the city works as a base for both sea and mountains. Summer suits beach days and swimming, while spring and early autumn are quieter. Hill towns such as Chieti and Sulmona are within day-trip range.

Pescara FAQ

Is Pescara worth visiting?

Yes for the seafront promenade, the beach in summer and as a base for the Abruzzo hill towns. It is a working city rather than a museum town, so it suits a trip that mixes coast and mountains.

How do you get to Pescara?

By train on the Adriatic line to Pescara Centrale, or by plane to Abruzzo airport close to the city. Driving is also an option along the coast road and the A14 motorway.

Can you visit Pescara on a day trip?

Yes. Chieti is inland and Vasto is south along the coast, and both work as day trips from Pescara.

How many days do you need in Pescara?

Two nights cover the seafront, the centre and a day trip to Chieti. Add a third night if you want to reach a hill town such as Sulmona.

When is the best time to visit Pescara?

May, June and September are warm enough for the sea with fewer crowds than July and August. August brings the Italian holiday rush, so book beds early.
