Tropea is a town on a cliff above the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Vibo Valentia province of Calabria, in southern Italy. The old town sits on the cliff edge, and the Santa Maria dell'Isola sanctuary stands on a rocky outcrop at its far end, above the water. The coast around the town is called the Costa degli Dei, and its beaches below the cliffs are the main reason most people come.

Tropea is also known for its sweet red onions, which local markets sell and local kitchens use in many dishes. A beach stay or a stop on a drive along the coast both work well. Late spring through early autumn is when the sea is warm and the beaches are open. Plan two or three days for the old town and a beach day. A longer stay leaves time to reach more of the coves along the shore.

Tropea in five

  1. Fly into Lamezia Terme and rent a carLamezia Terme (SUF) is about an hour away by road, and a car opens the beaches along Capo Vaticano. Trains and buses reach Tropea, but local stops are infrequent.Getting around Italy
  2. Book August rooms well aheadTropea is a summer beach town, and mid-August is the busiest week of the Italian year. Reserve early, or travel in June and September when the sea is warm and rooms are easier to find.
  3. Walk down to the beach before the crowdsThe steps from the old town lead to the main beach beneath the Santa Maria dell'Isola church. Arrive early for a spot and note that lifeguard and umbrella services are seasonal.
  4. Check hydrofoil times to the Aeolian IslandsIn summer, hydrofoils run from the harbor to Stromboli and other Aeolian islands. Schedules change by year and weather, so check operators before you plan a day trip.Tour options

Tropea FAQ

Is Tropea worth visiting?

Yes, for a summer beach stay with an old town on top of a cliff. It is crowded in July and August and quiet outside the season. It is not a sightseeing city, so it suits beach days.

How do you get to Tropea without a car?

By train or bus from Lamezia Terme, which has the nearest airport and a main rail station. Services exist but are infrequent, so check the timetable before you fly.

When is the best time to visit Tropea?

June and September for warm water and lighter crowds. July and August are hotter and busier, and many places close from November to Easter.

How many days do you need in Tropea?

Two days cover the old town and the beach. Four let you add Capo Vaticano and a boat or day trip. A week suits those who want to do nothing but swim.

What is Tropea famous for?

Its red onions, its rock-top church above the beach and the sea views from the old town. The coast nearby is called the Costa degli Dei.
