Reggio Calabria

Go to Reggio Calabria for the Riace Bronzes in the National Archaeological Museum and for the seafront view of Sicily across the Strait of Messina.

Reggio Calabria is a port city at the southern tip of mainland Italy, facing Sicily across the Strait of Messina. Greek settlers founded it in the 8th century BC. The 1908 earthquake that destroyed Messina also devastated Reggio, so much of the modern city was rebuilt afterward. The main reason to stop is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria, which holds the Riace Bronzes, two Greek bronze statues pulled from the sea off Riace in 1972.

The seafront gives a direct view of Sicily, and passenger ferries run from the city to Messina. Reggio Calabria works well as a stop on the way to or from Sicily, and a few hours is enough for the museum and a walk along the water. Stay a day or two if you want a base for exploring southern Calabria, including the Aspromonte mountains. Spring and early fall suit walking around the city best.

  3. Walk the Lungomare at sunsetThe seafront promenade looks across the strait to Sicily, with Etna visible on a clear day. It is flat, free and best in the evening when the heat eases.
  4. Use the city for Sicily or Calabria, not both at onceA night here suits an onward crossing to Sicily. For the coast and old towns of Calabria, a car is the practical choice, and Tropea is a long drive or a slow train ride north.Tropea

Reggio Calabria FAQ

Is Reggio Calabria worth visiting?

Yes, for the Riace Bronzes and the seafront, and as a stopover on the way to Sicily. It has fewer big sights than Naples or Palermo, so a half day to one night is enough for most visitors.

How do you get from Reggio Calabria to Sicily?

Foot passengers take a hydrofoil or ferry to Messina in about half an hour, and vehicles cross from Villa San Giovanni. Check the operators' timetables, since sailings and fares change by season.

What are the Riace Bronzes?

Two life-size Greek bronze warriors dating to the 5th century BC, found in the sea off Calabria in 1972 and now displayed in Reggio's National Archaeological Museum. Check the museum for current display and opening times.

Do you need a car in Reggio Calabria?

Not for the city, which is compact and has buses and taxis. A car helps for Aspromonte and the Calabrian coast, where trains are slow and infrequent.

How many days do you need in Reggio Calabria?

Half a day covers the museum and the seafront. Stay one night if you are crossing to Sicily early or arriving late, and add more only if you plan to explore southern Calabria by car.
