Verona is the largest city in the Veneto region of northern Italy and the capital of its own province, on the Adige river. Its Roman Arena in Piazza Bra is the city's symbol and one of Italy's best-preserved ancient amphitheaters; it could seat some 25,000 spectators on marble tiers. Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet here, and Casa di Giulietta, with its courtyard balcony, is a major draw for visitors. UNESCO declared the city a World Heritage Site in November 2000.
Two days is enough for the main sights: the Arena, the medieval squares of Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori, the Scaliger Tombs and Castelvecchio. Porta Nuova station sits south of the center, and Verona Airport lies about 10 km southwest, with a bus link to the station. The Arena hosts an opera festival every summer, running since 1913. Summers are hot, while winters are cool and humid, and fog is common from dusk until late morning.
Verona in five
- Book Arena opera tickets weeks aheadThe 2027 opera festival runs from 11 June to 11 September, and the best seats sell early. Buy only from the official Arena shop or box offices, and plan dinner before the show.Verona in 2 days
- Reserve Juliet's House, or stay in the courtyardThe courtyard is free and always open. The interior with the balcony needs a ticket and a booked time slot, even with a VeronaCard. Go early if you only want the statue.
- Price a VeronaCard against your listThe card costs €33 for 24 hours or €38 for 48 and includes city buses but not the airport shuttle. It pays only if you enter three or four paid sights; single tickets win on a short visit.Verona in 2 days
- Base near Piazza Bra or Piazza delle ErbeThe center is compact, so staying inside the old core puts the Arena, Juliet's House and dinner on foot. The station area is cheaper but 20 minutes away.Where to stay in Verona

Verona FAQ
Is Verona worth visiting?
Yes, for the Arena, the squares and a compact, walkable center. It is quieter than Venice and works as a stop on a Venice to Milan route, or as a base for Lake Garda and wine country.
How many days do you need in Verona?
One day covers the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, Juliet's House and the river. Two days allow a slower pace, Castelvecchio (closed Mondays), a trattoria evening and an opera night.
Is Verona a good day trip from Venice?
Yes, by fast train in about 1–1.5 hours each way. A night in Verona gives you the Arena at dusk, which is the best time to see it.
Do you need to book Juliet's House?
For the interior, yes: a booked time slot is required, even with a VeronaCard. The courtyard with the statue is free and open without a ticket. Book on the official Verona museums site, not through resellers.
Is Verona or Venice better?
Venice for canals and the lagoon, Verona for a Roman arena, calmer streets and lower prices. Many trips include both, a night each.
