Vicenza is a city in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, and it is where the architect Andrea Palladio spent much of his career. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renaissance palaces line the streets around Piazza dei Signori, and the Basilica Palladiana, a Palladio design, fronts the square. The Teatro Olimpico, also by Palladio, was completed after his death by Vincenzo Scamozzi. Its fixed stage is painted in perspective so that a street seems to run deep into the distance. Outside the center, La Rotonda stands on a low hill, a villa with four matching porticoed facades.
Vicenza lies on the rail line between Venice and Verona, so it fits a trip around the Veneto. The center, the Teatro Olimpico and the main square take about a day. Add La Rotonda, which is outside the center, and you need a longer day or an overnight stay. An overnight stay gives you the center in the evening.
Vicenza in five
- Pick two or three Palladio sights, not allThe Basilica Palladiana, Teatro Olimpico and La Rotonda are the main ones. Check each site's opening days and ticket rules on its official page before you plan a route.
- Check La Rotonda's visiting daysThe villa's interior opens only on limited days, while the grounds and exterior have separate access. Look at the official page before you take the bus or walk up.
- Walk Corso Palladio at duskThe main street is lined with palaces by Palladio and others and closes to most traffic. The center is flat and small, so an evening walk covers the highlights.
- Stay one night to add Verona or PaduaTrains reach Padua in about 15–25 minutes and Verona in about 30–45, so Vicenza can be one stop on a Veneto loop.Verona

Is Vicenza worth visiting?
Yes, for the Palladian architecture and a compact center. It has fewer crowds than Venice or Verona, so it suits architecture fans and those who want a calm stop.
How many days do you need in Vicenza?
One day covers the center and La Rotonda. Two days add the Teatro Olimpico, the museums and a Veneto day trip.
Is Vicenza a day trip from Venice?
Yes, by train in about 45–70 minutes. A day is enough for the palaces and the theater, but check opening days before you go.
What is Vicenza famous for?
The Renaissance buildings of Andrea Palladio and the Palladian villas of the Veneto, which UNESCO lists together. It also has a gold fair and local food such as baccalà alla vicentina.
Is Vicenza or Verona better?
Vicenza for Palladio and a quieter day, Verona for the Arena and a bigger city feel. They are 30–45 minutes apart.
