Mantua (Mantova) is a city and provincial capital in Lombardy, northern Italy. It lies on the Mincio, roughly midway between Milan and Venice. Three man-made lakes, created from the Mincio to protect the city, wrap around it on three sides. The historic center and the nearby town of Sabbioneta have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
The Gonzaga family, who ruled from 1328, turned the city into a Renaissance court and hired painters and architects such as Mantegna, Giulio Romano and Alberti. The Palazzo Ducale is one of the largest palace complexes in Europe. Palazzo Te, a villa on the edge of town, has frescoed halls such as the Sala dei Giganti. Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo premiered here in 1607, and Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet in the city. Summers are hot, humid and poorly ventilated, and winters bring fog and snow, so timing your visit matters. Verona, about 40 km northeast, has the nearest airport.

Is Mantua worth visiting?
Yes, for Renaissance palaces, a lakeside setting and good food, with fewer crowds than Verona or Venice. It is compact, so one full day covers the main sights.
How many days do you need in Mantua?
One day for the Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Te and a stroll to the lakes. Add a night to see the center at dusk and cycle the Mincio the next morning.
How do you get from Verona to Mantua?
By regional train, about 35–50 minutes, with frequent services. A car takes about 45 minutes, but the center is a limited-traffic zone, so park outside.
What should you eat in Mantua?
Tortelli di zucca (pumpkin tortelli), risotto alla pilota, and sbrisolona, a crumbly almond cake. Local trattorias near the center serve all three.
When is the best time to visit Mantua?
April, May, June and September. Summer is hot, the lakes bloom with lotus in July, and early September brings the book festival, so book rooms ahead then.
