Todi is a hilltop town in the province of Perugia, in Umbria, central Italy. It sits on a two-crested hill on the left bank of the Tiber, and from the top the valley opens out in every direction. The old town is medieval and compact. Piazza del Popolo, at its top, lies on the site of a Roman forum, and Roman cisterns support it. Visitors come for the views, the walls and an easy day among churches and palaces.
The Umbrians founded the town around the 8th to 7th century BC, and under Rome it was named Colonia Julia Fida Tuder. The cathedral, the Santissima Annunziata, was begun in the 12th century and completed in the 14th. It sits at the highest point of the city and is reached by 38 steps. Santa Maria della Consolazione, a Renaissance church outside the walls, was built between 1508 and 1607. The town lies roughly halfway between Perugia and Terni and is reached by road through the Tiber valley. The climate is temperate.
Todi in five
- Plan the logistics before you goThe station sits in the valley and the old town is uphill, so you need a bus, taxi or car. Check the timetable and ask your lodging about the transfer.
- Visit the Piazza del Popolo earlyThe medieval square is the town's center, with the cathedral and civic palaces around it. It is calm in the morning and quiet again after dinner.
- Walk to Santa Maria della ConsolazioneThe Renaissance church sits outside the old walls, a short walk or drive from the center. Check the opening hours before you go.
- Pair Todi with Spoleto or OrvietoBoth are an hour or so away and give a bigger loop of Umbria than Todi alone. A car makes the circuit easiest.Spoleto
- Stay inside the walls for the eveningsDay visitors leave by late afternoon, and the lanes empty out. A night in the old town lets you see them at dusk and at breakfast.

Read the guideTodi FAQ
Is Todi worth visiting?
Yes for a quiet piazza, hill views and a calm Umbrian stay. It has fewer headline sights than Assisi or Orvieto, so it suits a slow trip.
How do you get to Todi?
By car, or by train to Todi's valley station and a local bus uphill. Check bus timetables and ask your lodging about taxis.
Can you visit Todi on a day trip?
Yes, from Perugia or Orvieto by car. A day covers the piazza, the cathedral and Santa Maria della Consolazione, but not an evening.
How many days do you need in Todi?
Half a day for a quick look, one night to see the town after the crowds. Add a second night if you want to walk the countryside.
Is Todi or Spoleto better?
Spoleto has more sights and a summer festival, while Todi is quieter and smaller. Choose Todi for atmosphere and Spoleto for variety.
