Assisi

The Basilica of San Francesco draws pilgrims to this Umbrian hill town, and its Roman ruins and medieval streets reward a longer stay.

Assisi is a hill town in the Province of Perugia, Umbria, on the slopes of Monte Subasio about 26 km southeast of Perugia. It is the home of St Francis, patron saint of Italy, and St Clare. St Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor here in 1208, and the Basilica of San Francesco has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, as part of a listing that also covers other Franciscan sites.

The basilica has a lower and an upper church, but the town also has Roman remains. An amphitheater's oval plan still shows through the medieval houses built around it, and the Temple of Minerva stands on Piazza del Comune. The Rocca Maggiore castle sits on the hill above the town. Spring and autumn are fairly mild but rainy, and summer is warm without being muggy. A full day covers the main sights, and an overnight stay gives you more time in the streets.

Assisi in five

  1. Stay one night to see it without the groupsDay-trippers leave by late afternoon, and mornings before 10am are calm. A night lets you walk the lanes at dusk and see the basilica at an easier hour.
  2. Dress for churchesShoulders and knees need covering at the basilicas, and staff may refuse entry otherwise. Check each church's page for hours and any quiet or service closures before you go.
  3. Take the train to Santa Maria degli Angeli, then a busAssisi station is in the valley below the old town. A local bus or a taxi climbs the hill, so allow extra time with luggage.Italy by train off-peak
  4. Walk to the Rocca Maggiore or the EremoThe hilltop fortress gives the best views, and the Eremo delle Carceri is a short ride and woodland walk above town. Both are easier in the morning light.

Assisi FAQ

Is Assisi worth visiting?

Yes, for the basilicas and the setting. It is small and quiet, so it suits one night more than a long stay.

Can you visit Assisi as a day trip from Rome?

Yes, by regional train in about 2 hours each way plus a bus up the hill. It is a long day, so staying a night is easier.

How do you get from Assisi station to the town?

By local bus or taxi up the hill, since the station is below the old town. Check the bus timetable, especially in the evening.

What should you wear in Assisi?

Cover shoulders and knees for the basilicas. Wear comfortable shoes, because the lanes are steep and paved with stone.

How long do you need in Assisi?

A morning covers the basilica and the center. Stay overnight to add the fortress, the Eremo and a slower evening.
