Spoleto is a hill town in Umbria, central Italy, set on a slope above a green valley. The Rocca Albornoziana, a fortress built in the 14th century for the papal state, rises above the town. The Ponte delle Torri, a bridge of stone arches that crosses a deep ravine, is another landmark. Below the old town, the remains of a Roman theater from the 1st century BC still show some of their stone seating.
The old town is small enough to cross on foot, and the cathedral and the fortress are a short walk apart. Visit in spring or early autumn, when the steep streets and the bridge are easier to manage, since July and August are hot. Summer also brings the Festival dei Due Mondi, founded in 1958 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti, with music, opera, theater and art across the town. Plan one full day for the main sights, or stay overnight if you want to see a performance.

Is Spoleto worth visiting?
Yes. It has a fortress, a Roman theater, a fresco-filled cathedral and a famous bridge, all in a walkable town with fewer crowds than Perugia or Assisi. It works as a day trip from Rome.
How do you get from Rome to Spoleto?
By train from Roma Termini in about 1.5 to 2 hours, then a local bus or taxi uphill from the station. A car is not needed, and the old town is easy on foot.
When is the Spoleto Festival?
The Festival dei Due Mondi runs for about two weeks from late June into July each year. Check the festival's official page for dates and book rooms early.
How many days do you need in Spoleto?
A long day covers the Rocca, the cathedral and the bridge. Two nights add the Monteluco walk and a slower dinner, or a trip to Assisi.
Is Spoleto better than Todi?
Spoleto has more sights and a festival, while Todi is smaller and quieter. If you only have time for one, pick Spoleto for variety and Todi for atmosphere.
