Rome is Italy's national capital and the capital of Lazio, and it sits on the Tiber in western central Italy. It is also the country's largest city. Its historic center, inside the Aurelian Walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ancient Rome grew into an empire from here, and the Colosseum, which made the 2007 New Seven Wonders list, stands near the Roman Forum. Churches and squares that popes shaped over the centuries sit among the ruins.

Vatican City is an independent state inside Rome, home to the Holy See and the center of the Catholic Church. Trastevere, across the Tiber, is a historic neighborhood with a traditional feel. Villa Borghese, the city's best-known large park, has shaded walks and art galleries. In spring and autumn, the weather is at its most pleasant, while August is the warmest month, averaging 31.7 °C by day.
