Lazio is the region of central Italy that surrounds Rome, the national capital, and it is the second most populous region after Lombardy. Rome draws around 30 million visitors a year, but the rest of the region holds its own history: Etruscan necropolises at Cerveteri and Tarquinia on the Tyrrhenian coast, the medieval City of Popes at Viterbo, and Hadrian's Villa and the Villa d'Este at Tivoli. The land runs from hills and mountains to coastal plains and volcanic lakes, so the ride between two places can take longer than the map suggests.
Ostia Antica, the old port of ancient Rome, is reached by train from the city and is one of Italy's major archaeological parks. Frascati and the other Castelli Romani hill towns around the Alban Hills are a common day trip, with Lake Albano and Lake Nemi nearby. Beaches at Sabaudia, Terracina and Sperlonga are popular summer resorts. Rome needs several days on its own, so add one or two of these areas per day.
Lazio in five
- Use Rome as the base for most tripsOstia Antica, Tivoli and Frascati are all regional-train or bus trips from the capital. Sleeping in Rome saves hotel changes.Where to stay in Rome

What is Lazio known for?
Rome, first, plus ancient ports and villas, hill towns, volcanic lakes and a long coast. Outside the capital the region is quieter, with more ruins and countryside than headline sights.
Is Lazio worth visiting beyond Rome?
Yes, for one or two day trips. Ostia Antica is easy by train, Tivoli has two major sites, and the Castelli Romani give a green break from the city.
How do you get around Lazio without a car?
Regional trains and Cotral buses from Rome reach Ostia, Tivoli and Frascati. For smaller hill towns and Civita di Bagnoregio, a car or a guided tour is easier.
How many days do you need in Lazio?
Add one or two days to your Rome stay: one for Ostia Antica, one for Tivoli or the Castelli Romani. A week is only needed for the coast and northern Lazio.
What is the best time to visit Lazio?
April, May, September and October for pleasant weather and open sites. Summer is hot and crowded, and the coast gets busy in July and August.
