Galleria Corsini - Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica

Visit Galleria Corsini in Rome’s Palazzo Corsini to see paintings by Caravaggio and Guido Reni, plus the palace’s late-Baroque rooms and courtyard.

Galleria Corsini is an art museum inside Palazzo Corsini on Via della Lungara in Trastevere, opposite Villa Farnesina. Built by Ferdinando Fuga in 1736, the late-Baroque palace has a grand staircase, a central courtyard and richly detailed interiors. Its collection focuses on Italian paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, with works by Caravaggio, Guido Reni and Fra’ Angelico, as well as Rubens, Poussin and Van Dyck. It is a quieter alternative to Rome’s better-known art collections.

Palazzo Corsini stands on Via della Lungara in Trastevere, opposite Villa Farnesina. Ferdinando Fuga designed the palace, which was built in 1736. Its late-Baroque interiors include a grand staircase and central courtyard, along with detailed stonework and wrought-iron balconies.

Queen Christina of Sweden once lived in the palace. In 1883, it became Italy’s first national gallery. The building also houses part of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, giving the site a continuing role in Rome’s cultural life.

The collection centres on Italian painting from the 16th and 17th centuries. Look for Caravaggio’s San Giovanni Battista, Guido Reni’s Salome con la Testa di San Giovanni Battista and Fra’ Angelico’s Corsini Triptych. The galleries also include works by Rubens, Poussin and Van Dyck.

The palace contains an impressive library lined with bound volumes. The display layout can be difficult to follow, and labels may provide limited detail. An online guide or a question at the welcome desk can help you put the artworks in context.
