Merano is a spa town in South Tyrol, the German-speaking province in northern Italy, set in the Adige valley at the foot of the Alps. The Passer river runs through the town. It grew into a health resort in the late 1800s, and many of its hotels and villas date from that period. Street signs and menus appear in German and Italian. The town keeps a slow pace, with long walks along the river, cafés and thermal baths.
People go for the castle gardens, the arcaded Old Town and walks into the valleys and hills. Trauttmansdorff Castle and its gardens sit above the town. The mountains around Merano have trails at many levels of difficulty, and nearby orchards and vineyards supply local food and wine. Spring and early autumn suit walking best, and summer is better for the higher trails. Plan at least two nights to see the town at an easy pace, and add a day for a trip into the mountains or a nearby valley.
Merano in five
- Read the signs in German and ItalianSouth Tyrol is officially bilingual, so street names, menus and bus stops often show both languages. Learn a few words of each, starting with Grüß Gott and buongiorno.
- Walk the Tappeiner Promenade before noonThis path runs along the slope above Merano, with views over the valley and the town. Summer afternoons are hot, so go early.
- Ride the Vinschgau railway to NaturnsThe regional train leaves Merano station and runs west up the Vinschgau valley past apple orchards. It is an easy way out of town without a car.
- Carry cash for huts and village cafésSome mountain huts and village cafés take only cash, so check before you order. Keep small euro notes for buses and bakeries.Money and costs
- Shop in the morningMany shops and some cafés close for a long midday break and on Sundays. Plan groceries and errands for the morning.

Is Merano worth visiting?
Yes, for the spa, the riverside and promenades, and walks on the slopes above town. It suits a few days in the Alps and pairs well with Bolzano and the Vinschgau valley.
How many days do you need in Merano?
Two days covers the old town, the Tappeiner Promenade and a visit to the thermal baths. Add a day for the Vinschgau railway or a trip to Bolzano.
How do you get to Merano?
The train from Bolzano is the simplest link. Merano is also reachable by road, and a car is useful for valley villages but not needed in the town.
When is the best time to visit Merano?
April to May and September to October bring mild weather and fewer crowds than midsummer. Summer is warm and busy, and the Advent market in December adds a festive touch.
Should I stay in Merano or Bolzano?
Stay in Merano for the spa, promenades and hillside walks. Stay in Bolzano for a bigger city with museums and more restaurants. The two are about 25 minutes apart by train.
