Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 30 km from Naples. It is the largest of the Phlegrean Islands and is split into six comuni. Monte Epomeo, its highest point, rises to about 788 m in the centre. It is an uplifted block of rock, not an active volcano, and its wooded interior can be explored on foot.
People come for the thermal spas, whose waters are alkaline, and for island cooking such as coniglio all'Ischitana, rabbit braised in wine with tomatoes and herbs. The Aragonese Castle on a rock at Ischia Ponte is the island's most visited monument. Ferries and hydrofoils from Naples take about 60 to 90 minutes. Summer is the busiest season, when the population rises to about 300,000, roughly five times the number of residents.

- Book fast boats early in summerHydrofoils and ferries leave Naples and Pozzuoli for Ischia Porto, Casamicciola and Forio. Crossings run from about 50 minutes to 90, depending on the boat, so check the operator before you pick.Ischia from Naples
- Pick one thermal park, not threeThermal parks sell day tickets with pools at different temperatures, and the large ones open roughly April to October. Compare seasons and what is included before you buy.Ischia thermal parks and spas
- Plan with the island buses, and check car rulesTwo circular bus lines loop the island and call at every main town. Some non-resident vehicles face a seasonal landing ban on the ferries, so read the operator's notice before booking a car.

Ischia FAQ
Is Ischia better than Capri?
For price, beaches and thermal baths, yes. Ischia is bigger, cheaper and less famous, while Capri is smaller, glossier and closer to day-trip crowds. Choose Ischia for a longer stay and Capri for a single dramatic day.
How do you get from Naples to Ischia?
By hydrofoil or ferry from Naples Beverello, Calata di Massa or Pozzuoli. Fast boats take about 50 minutes to an hour and ferries 70–90 minutes. Check the operator's timetable, since it changes by season.
Which town is best to stay in on Ischia?
Ischia Porto for easy ferries, Forio for sunsets and beaches, Sant'Angelo for a quiet village feel, and Lacco Ameno for spa stays. If you want one, pick Forio or Ischia Porto.
How many days do you need in Ischia?
Two days give you a thermal park, a beach and a village evening. Four days adds Mount Epomeo, Sant'Angelo and a boat trip to Procida without rushing.
Do you need a car on Ischia?
No for most visitors. Circular buses reach the main towns, taxis and boats fill the gaps, and parking in villages is tight. Check the current rules for bringing a car on the ferry before you plan one.
