Procida is the smallest of the three main islands in the Bay of Naples, part of Campania in southern Italy. Its best-known sight is Marina Corricella, a fishing harbor where pastel houses climb the hillside above the boats. Above it, Terra Murata is an old walled village with narrow lanes and the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo. The old town sits on high ground, so expect steps. Marina Grande is where the ferries from Naples arrive.

Ferries run from Naples and Pozzuoli, and the island suits slow days of walking, harbor meals and swimming. A day trip covers the harbor and the old town. Staying a night lets you see the harbor after the day boats leave and reach the beaches before the day crowds arrive. Late spring through early autumn is the usual swimming season, and one or two days is enough to see the main sights at an easy pace.

  1. Choose a ferry that fits your dayBoats run from Naples, Pozzuoli and Ischia, with fast and slow options. Check the operator's timetable and the last return before you book, since seas can cancel sailings.
  2. Go to Marina Corricella earlyThe old fishing harbor is the postcard stop and fills by midday. Start at the top near Terra Murata and walk down, then eat lunch away from the water.Bay of Naples
  3. Leave the car behindThe island is a few kilometers long with narrow lanes. Local buses and minibuses cover it, and rules on visitor vehicles change by season, so check before you try to bring one.
  4. Compare with Ischia and CapriProcida is the quietest of the three. Ischia has spas and bigger beaches and Capri has the famous scenery, so pick by the kind of day you want.Ischia

Procida FAQ

Is Procida worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a small island with a working fishing harbor and few crowds. It has fewer headline sights than Capri or Ischia, so go for the harbor walks and a swim, not a checklist.

Can you visit Procida as a day trip from Naples?

Yes. Ferries and hydrofoils take about 30 to 60 minutes, so a morning boat gives most of a day. Check the last return and keep a margin in case sailings are cancelled in rough seas.

How many days do you need in Procida?

One day covers Marina Corricella, Terra Murata and a beach. Add a night if you want the lanes after the day-trippers leave, and a second night only if you plan to swim and walk slowly.

Is Procida better than Capri or Ischia?

It is quieter and cheaper, but smaller with fewer things to do. Capri has the famous scenery and Ischia has spas and larger beaches. Pick Procida for a calm day, and the others for more activity.

Are there beaches on Procida?

Yes, including sandy beaches on the island's southern side such as Chiaiolella and Chiaia, some reached by stairs. Check summer access and any lido charges on the day, since arrangements vary.
