Brindisi is a port city on the Adriatic coast, at the heel of Italy's boot in the region of Puglia. Ferries leave its harbor for Greece and Albania, and Brindisi-Salento airport serves the area. The city's best-known landmark is a Roman column that stands at the top of the old harbor steps. The Appian Way, the road from Rome, ended here, and one of the two columns that marked its end is still standing.

Brindisi works well as a night between Puglia's larger towns and the coast, or as a stop before or after a ferry or flight. Spend the time on the seafront and in the old town, then move on to Lecce or the Salento coast. Spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons for walking, and summer is hot. Plan at least one night if you want time for the old town.

Brindisi in five

  1. Treat it as a gateway, then move onThe airport is a short ride from town and the station links Lecce, Bari and Taranto. Most visitors stay one night at most, so line up the onward car or train before you land.Lecce travel guide
  2. Rent the car for the Salento coastWhitewashed towns and beaches south of here are far easier by car than by regional train. Compare pickup rates before landing, and check ZTL signs at the edge of old centers.Getting around Europe
  3. Check the ferry port, not the stationFerries sail from the port area, which is a separate stop from the rail station. Routes and operators change by season, so confirm each sailing on the operator's own site before you buy.
  4. Give the old town two hoursOne of the two Roman columns that marked the end of the Appian Way still stands by the harbor steps. The cathedral, castle exteriors and the promenade fit comfortably into a morning.
  5. Swim at Torre Guaceto in June or SeptemberThe protected coast north of town has a nature reserve with beaches. Access rules for reserves change, so read the reserve's own site before you drive out.

Brindisi FAQ

Is Brindisi worth visiting?

As a stop of a few hours, yes: the harbor, the Roman column and the promenade are pleasant. It is not a place to spend several days. Lecce, Ostuni and the coast reward more time.

How do you get from Brindisi airport to the city?

The center is only a short ride away by bus or taxi. Check the airport and the local operator for the current shuttle times, because they follow the flight schedule.

Is Brindisi a good base for Puglia?

Only for a flight or ferry connection. It is flat, practical and cheap to reach, but the best old towns are 30–90 minutes away. Many visitors pick Lecce or Ostuni as the base instead.

Are there ferries from Brindisi to Greece?

Ferries to Greece have long run from the port, mostly in the warmer months. Routes and operators change from year to year, so check the current timetable with the operator before you plan the trip.

Do you need a car for Brindisi itself?

No, the old town and seafront are walkable. You need a car only for beaches, Torre Guaceto and the inland towns, which regional trains and buses reach slowly.
