Lecce is a city on the Salento peninsula, at the heel of Italy's boot in the Apulia region (Puglia). Its historic center is built from pietra leccese, a soft limestone that turns golden in the sun. Most of its churches and palaces date from the Baroque period, roughly the 17th and 18th centuries. The Basilica di Santa Croce and the Piazza del Duomo are the best-known sights, and a Roman amphitheater stands near the center, a sign the city was settled long before the Baroque.
Lecce suits travelers who like to walk, eat well and visit churches at their own pace. From here the coast is within reach by car. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for walking, while July and August are hot and the beaches are crowded. Two to three days covers the historic center. A rental car opens up more of the coast, but check parking and traffic-limited zones before you drive into the center.

Is Lecce worth visiting?
Yes. It has dense Baroque architecture, good food and easy access to Salento's beaches, and it is less crowded than Florence or Rome. It is small, so two days is enough for the city itself.
How many days do you need in Lecce?
Two days covers Santa Croce, the Duomo area, the Roman amphitheater and a long dinner. Four to six days lets you add Otranto, Gallipoli and beach days.
Do you need a car in Lecce?
Not in the city, but yes for the beaches and towns around Salento. Buses and trains exist but are slow, so a car gives you more freedom.
Where should you stay in Lecce?
Inside or beside the old town, so you can walk to dinner. If you plan beach days, a masseria in the countryside gives space and parking, but you will rely on a car.
What is the best time to visit Lecce?
May, June, September and October for warm weather without the crush of August. Summer is hot, and winter is mild but quiet, with some coastal places closed.
