Otranto is a walled port town on the east coast of the Salento peninsula, in the province of Lecce, Apulia. It is the easternmost comune in Italy, and the Strait of Otranto links the Adriatic and Ionian seas. The cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata keeps a medieval mosaic floor with a large Tree of Life, dated 1163 to 1165. The Aragonese Castle, built from 1485 to 1498, sits by a moat near the old town. In August 1480 an Ottoman fleet captured the town and held it for 13 months.

The old walled quarter has narrow, winding streets. The coast runs about 25 km, with sandy stretches in the north and rocky cliffs elsewhere, and Santa Maria di Leuca lies about 50 km south. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mild, with most rain falling in autumn and winter. Trains reach Otranto only with a change at Maglie, so a car makes the beaches and the Alimini lakes north of town easier to reach.

Otranto in five

  1. Step inside the cathedral for the floor mosaicA 12th-century mosaic of the Tree of Life covers the floor of the nave and aisles. Cover shoulders and knees, and check opening hours with the town or diocese before you go, since they change by season.
  2. Rent a car for the beachesCoves along the coast road, Baia dei Turchi to the north and the drive to Santa Maria di Leuca are easiest with a car. In July and August parking fills by mid-morning, so arrive early.
  3. Check the old-town traffic rules before you drive inMany Italian town centers restrict traffic (ZTL) and fine cars that enter without permission. Ask your hotel where to park, and check the town's official site for the rules in force on your dates.
  4. Choose June or September for warm sea and spaceJuly and August are the busiest and most expensive weeks. Many hotels and restaurants close from late autumn to spring, so confirm opening dates before booking outside summer.Best time to visit Italy

Otranto FAQ

Is Otranto worth visiting?

Yes, for a mix of history and sea. The cathedral mosaic, the castle and the walled old town are compact, and the beaches are close. It is smaller and quieter than Lecce, so it suits a slow stay more than a checklist.

How many days do you need in Otranto?

Two days cover the old town, the cathedral and one beach. Add a third day for Santa Maria di Leuca or a boat trip. A week works if you treat Otranto as a base for the whole of southern Salento.

Do you need a car in Otranto?

Not for the old town, but yes for most beaches, small villages and day trips. Buses exist, yet they are slow for coast-hopping. Without a car, base in Lecce and visit Otranto by bus or tour.

Is Otranto better than Gallipoli?

Otranto is calmer and has more history, with the cathedral and castle. Gallipoli has livelier summer nights and sandy Ionian beaches. If you only choose one, take Otranto for atmosphere and Gallipoli for beach nightlife.

Can you swim in Otranto in May?

Yes, though the sea is still cool and days can be breezy. It warms through June and is at its best from July to September. Spring suits walking and sightseeing more than long beach days.
