Cisternino is a small town in the province of Brindisi, in Apulia (Puglia), about 50 km northwest of Brindisi. It sits on the last edge of the Murgia at about 394 m above sea level and looks southwest over the Valle d'Itria. The historic center has whitewashed stone houses with cool, shaded, cave-like interiors, narrow streets and several churches. It is on the national list of Italy's prettiest small towns.
The Itria Valley is the wider draw. Its trulli, prehistoric conical dry-stone houses protected under UNESCO safeguards, dot the countryside, and masserie, traditional Apulian farmhouses, sit along country roads. Public transport inside town is minimal, so a car is the practical way to get around. At the table, try orecchiette con braciole e polpette, pasta with tomato sauce, stuffed beef rolls and bread balls, or bombette, roasted pork rolls.
Cisternino in five
- Eat at a fornello prontoPick raw meat at the butcher counter and it is grilled in the back room for you. Ask the price per kilo before you order, since you pay by weight, and arrive before the evening rush.Brindisi travel guide
- Rent a car, skip the slow trainsA regional line serves the village, but timetables are sparse and Ostuni, Alberobello and the coast are far easier by car. Compare pickups before you land.Getting around Europe
- Park below the old centerThe medieval lanes are narrow and parts are a ZTL. Use the lots at the edge and walk in, and ask your host about plates and permits if you are sleeping inside the walls.
- Base here for quiet, in Ostuni for eveningsCisternino shuts early and has few clubs. Ostuni is busier at night and only 20 minutes away, which makes it the better choice if you want a lively base.Ostuni
- Go in spring or early autumnMay and September are warm without the midsummer heat, and the countryside is green or golden. Many masserie and restaurants close for the winter months.

Is Cisternino worth visiting?
Yes, for a half day or a quiet night, if you like small whitewashed villages and good grilled meat. It has few sights, so it is a place to eat and wander rather than tick off.
What is a fornello pronto?
A butcher shop that also grills. You pick raw cuts from the counter, the butcher cooks them in a back room and you eat at simple tables. Ask the price per kilo first.
Is Cisternino better than Ostuni?
It is quieter and smaller, with less evening life. Ostuni is larger, more dramatic on its hill and busier at night. Many visitors split a stay between both.
How do you get to Cisternino?
By car from Brindisi in about 40 minutes or Bari in about an hour. A slow regional line and buses also reach it, but they are infrequent, so check timetables before you rely on them.
How many days do you need in Cisternino?
A night or two is plenty for the village. Add more if you use it as a base for Ostuni, Alberobello and the coast, which fill several easy days by car.
