Pécs is a city in southern Hungary, at the foot of the Mecsek hills and roughly 200 km southwest of Budapest. Most visitors come for the Early Christian necropolis, a group of burial chambers dating to the 4th century, which UNESCO has listed as a World Heritage Site since 2000. The Zsolnay Quarter, the former porcelain factory of the Zsolnay family, is the other main draw, and the family's glazed ceramics appear on many buildings around the center.

The city also has a layer of Ottoman history. The mosque on Széchenyi Square was built in the 16th century and later became a church. The University of Pécs keeps the old center busy with students during the academic year. A practical plan is one or two nights: the necropolis in the morning, the Zsolnay Quarter in the afternoon, and a walk around the center. Spring and early autumn suit walking best, because summer heat can be strong.

Pécs in five

  1. Buy the World Heritage ticket for the Roman tombsThe package covers the Cella Septichora Visitor Centre, the Early Christian Mausoleum and the tombs at Apáca Street 8, and stays valid for 2 days. UNESCO listed the necropolis in 2000.Pécs in 2 days
  2. Plan around Monday closuresThe Zsolnay exhibitions and the Early Christian Mausoleum are closed on Mondays, and the visitor centre opens Tuesday to Sunday. Keep Monday for the center, the cathedral exterior and the mosque church.
  3. Pick the Zsolnay ticket or the Heritage ticketThe Zsolnay Quarter grounds are free, but exhibitions need a ticket. The Heritage ticket adds the Cella Septichora Visitor Centre and the Medieval University to the Zsolnay exhibitions.
  4. Step into the mosque church on Széchenyi SquareThe Gázi Kászim Pasha mosque is now a parish church. Its mihrab prayer niche and Ottoman-era dome survive, and visiting hours are listed on the city tourism site.
  5. Sleep in Pécs rather than day-tripping from BudapestPécs is far enough from the capital that a one-day trip eats the day in transit. Treat it as a base for the south, with Eger as the northern alternative.Eger or Pécs

Pécs FAQ

Is Pécs worth visiting?

Yes, for UNESCO-listed Roman tombs, the Zsolnay Quarter, a mosque church and a warmer southern feel. It suits travelers who have already seen Budapest and want a second city with less crowding.

How many days do you need in Pécs?

Two days cover the tombs, the cathedral, the mosque church and the Zsolnay Quarter. Add a third for the Mecsek hills or a wine village such as Palkonya.

Can you do Pécs as a day trip from Budapest?

You can, but the rail journey is long and leaves little time. One night in Pécs is the better plan; check mavcsoport.hu for direct trains and current times.

What is the Zsolnay Quarter?

It is a restored former porcelain factory complex with exhibitions, cafés and craft shops. The grounds are free to enter, and the permanent exhibitions are open Tuesday to Sunday.

Can you visit the Roman tombs of Pécs?

Yes. The Cella Septichora Visitor Centre and the Early Christian Mausoleum are open to visitors Tuesday to Sunday, and a guided World Heritage tour in English runs on set dates.
