Balaton sits in western Hungary and is the largest lake in Central Europe. Hungarians call it 'a Balaton' with the article, and poetically call it the Hungarian Sea. It is about 77 km long, up to 18 km wide and roughly 600 km², yet only about 11 to 12.5 m deep at its deepest point, near Tihany. The water warms enough for swimming in summer, and the lake became a major tourist destination in the 1960s and 1970s.

The two shores feel different. The south shore is flat, with resort towns, nightlife and beaches of grass, rock or silty sand, though many resorts have added artificial sandy beaches. Siófok draws young people to its large clubs, while Balatonfüred is an older bathing town on the north shore. The north shore is hilly, with wineries, the Tihany Peninsula and the volcanic hills around Badacsony. Peak season runs from June to the end of August, when beaches are busiest and the average summer water temperature is about 25 °C.

Lake Balaton in five

  1. Pick a shore firstThe south shore around Siófok is shallow and sandy, good for small children. The north shore has deeper water, wine villages like Badacsony and quieter towns.
  2. Come from June to August to swimThe lake warms fast in summer because it is shallow. Outside summer many beaches, ferries and restaurants run reduced hours or close.
  3. Expect to pay at managed beachesMany managed beaches (strand) charge a small entry fee in summer. Free beaches exist but have fewer facilities.
  4. Cross by ferry at TihanyA car ferry links Szántód on the south shore with Tihany on the north. The route planner for the lake and the south has the operator link and the crossing time.Balaton and the south

Is Lake Balaton worth visiting outside summer?

For wine and walks on the north shore, yes, in May and September. From November to March many hotels, restaurants and ferries close.

How do you get from Budapest to Lake Balaton?

By train from Déli or Kelenföld stations to Siófok or Balatonfüred in about 1.5–2 hours, or by car on the M7 motorway to the south shore.

Which shore of Lake Balaton is better?

The south shore is shallow, sandy and lively, good for families and nightlife. The north shore has deeper water, vineyards, hills and the Tihany peninsula, so wine and walking fans prefer it.
