Eger is a city with county rights in northern Hungary and the seat of Heves County. It sits in the Eger Stream valley, between the Mátra and Bükk mountains. The Baroque centre is built around Dobó tér, the main square. Above it, on Castle Hill, a small garrison under Captain István Dobó held the castle against the Ottoman army in 1552. An Ottoman-era minaret, about 40 metres high, can still be climbed for views over the town centre.
Most day visitors come from Slovakia, and the main reasons to go are the history, the Baroque churches and the red wine. Egri Bikavér, the Bull's Blood of Eger, is the best-known red, and the cellars of Szépasszony-valley, south of the centre, are the main place to taste it. Trains to Budapest take about 1.5 hours and buses about 2 hours, so a weekend from the capital is practical. January is the only month that averages below freezing, at -0.8 °C, while July averages 21.6 °C.

Eger FAQ
Is Eger worth visiting?
Yes, for a castle, a minaret, a Baroque center and one of Hungary's best-known wine regions in a walkable town. It suits one or two nights better than a rushed day from Budapest.
How do you get from Budapest to Eger?
Visit Eger lists direct trains from Keleti station in under 2 hours, a coach of about 1 hour 50 minutes and a drive of about 1 hour 30 minutes. Check mavcsoport.hu and volanbusz.hu for current times.
How many days do you need in Eger?
Two days covers the castle, the basilica, the minaret, the thermal bath and an evening in the wine valley. One night works if you skip the bath.
What is Egri Bikavér?
It is a dry red wine from the Eger region, described by Visit Eger as one of the best-known and best-selling Hungarian dry reds. Try it at the cellars in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman.
Can you visit the Eger thermal bath in the afternoon only?
Yes. The bath lists a cheaper afternoon ticket from 15:00, which suits a day with the castle in the morning. Check termalfurdo.egertermal.hu for current prices and hours.
