Rhodes Town is the capital of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands in Greece's southeastern Aegean Sea. Its center is the walled Old Town, shaped under the Knights of St John, who held the island from 1309 to 1522. Walk the Street of the Knights, lined with inns built for the Knights' language groups, and visit the Palace of the Grand Master. Mandraki harbor, at the north end of town, still handles fishing boats and ferries to other islands.
Plan at least one full day for the Old Town and its walls, and two or three days for a city break or the first nights of a longer Rhodes trip. Spring and early autumn suit walking better than the midsummer heat. Most travelers choose between sleeping inside the walls, where streets are quieter once day visitors leave, or the New Town outside them, which has more space.
Rhodes Town in five
- Walk the Old Town at opening or after sunsetCruise and tour groups fill the Street of the Knights and the main lanes from late morning. Early and evening light is calmer, and the stone is cooler underfoot.
- Check museum hours before you plan the dayThe Palace of the Grand Master and the museums keep their own hours and closing days, which change by season. Confirm on the official ticket pages, and avoid the first morning after a holiday.Buy tickets and tours
- Choose the Old Town or the New Town to sleepInside the walls you walk to sights, but taxis stop at the gates and rooms can be noisy. The New Town has beaches, larger hotels and easier parking.Where to stay in Rhodes
- Use the harbor for boat days, not just the beachDay boats to Symi and coastal cruises leave from the commercial and Mandraki harbors in season. Book a ticket the day before in peak weeks.

Read the guideRhodes Town FAQ
Is Rhodes Town worth visiting?
Yes. The Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the harbors and beaches sit beside it. Many visitors spend one to two days here before heading to the coast.
How many days do you need in Rhodes Town?
One full day covers the Old Town and the harbor; two days adds the New Town, a swim and a boat trip. Longer stays work only if you use Rhodes Town as a base for day trips.
Is it better to stay in the Old Town or the New Town?
Stay in the Old Town for atmosphere and walking, accepting noise and stairs. Choose the New Town for beaches, larger hotels and parking. Both are within a 10–20 minute walk of each other.
How far is Rhodes Town from the airport?
About 15 km, which is 20–30 minutes by taxi or a bit longer by bus. Taxis can drop you at the Old Town gates, but cars cannot enter most lanes.
Can you walk around Rhodes Town in a day?
Yes. The Old Town is compact, and the harbors and New Town are a short walk beyond. Start early in summer and keep the afternoon for shade, museums or the beach.
