Lindos

Lindos is a whitewashed village on Rhodes, Greece, where the walk up to a Doric temple and a Knights' castle is the main draw. Go early, before the day-trip coaches arrive, or stay overnight.

Lindos is a whitewashed village on the east coast of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands in Greece. Its houses climb the slope below an acropolis that holds a Doric temple to Athena Lindia. A medieval castle built by the Knights of St John stands on the same height, and the village runs down to a small harbor bay with a beach.

Most visitors come on a day trip from Rhodes Town, and the site is busiest when tour groups arrive. The walk up to the acropolis is steep and takes time, so plan at least half a day in the village. Spring and fall suit walking the lanes in mild weather. A night here lets you see the village after the day groups leave. Stay near the center if you want to walk everywhere, and plan on a bus or car to reach it from Rhodes Town.

Lindos in five

  1. Climb the acropolis in the first hoursThe temple of Athena Lindia and the medieval walls stand on a rock with almost no shade. Go early, bring water and check the culture ministry's site for current hours and tickets.
  2. Walk up instead of riding a donkeyDonkeys carry visitors up the lanes in summer, but animal welfare concerns are widely raised and the climb is short. Wear shoes with grip, since the stone steps are polished and slippery.
  3. Stay one night to see the quiet eveningsAfter the coaches leave the lanes empty out and the harbor turns calm. Rooms sit in restored village houses, many up steps, so ask about luggage access before you book.Rhodes
  4. Park at the village edgeCars cannot enter the lanes, and the parking areas outside fill by late morning in summer. Arrive early, or take a taxi or the bus from Rhodes Town.
  5. Take the bus from Rhodes Town if you do not driveBuses run from Rhodes Town's east-side station, with a trip time of around 1 to 1.5 hours. Check the last return time before you settle in for sunset.Rhodes Town
