Georgia

A trip to Georgia moves from Tbilisi's old streets to wine villages in Kakheti, stone towers in Svaneti and glaciers in the high Caucasus.

Georgia is a country in the Caucasus on the eastern Black Sea coast, and it straddles the line between Europe and Asia. Its capital and largest city is Tbilisi. The country borders Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the south-east and the Black Sea to the west. Georgian is the main language, written in its own script, and the currency is the Georgian lari (GEL).

Visitors come for winemaking that dates to about 6000 BCE, for cave complexes such as Vardzia and Uplistsikhe carved into cliffs, and for stone fortress-houses and watchtowers in Svaneti. Feasts follow strict custom, with a tamada leading a series of toasts, usually with song and dance. Mount Shkhara, at 5,068 metres, is the highest peak in the country. Mountain roads and high passes may be snowy in winter, so late spring to early autumn is the simpler window for the high valleys. Two weeks covers Tbilisi, Kakheti and one mountain area without rushing.

Five things to know before Georgia

  1. Read the FCDO advice on Abkhazia and South Ossetia

FCDO advises against all travel to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Entering Georgia from Russia through those regions is illegal under Georgian law and can bring heavy fines or up to 4 years in prison. UK travel advice

  2. Buy insurance that meets the 30,000 GEL entry rule

Since 1 January 2026 every tourist must show health and accident insurance of at least 30,000 GEL, in English or Georgian, covering arrival to departure dates. A Georgian or foreign insurer can issue it. Travel insurance

  3. Check the visa-free stay for your passport

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish citizens can enter without a visa for one full year. EU citizens may enter on a national ID card, but carry your passport, since airlines and land borders can query IDs. Visa checker

  4. Carry lari for villages, minibuses and guesthouses

Goods and services must be paid for in lari even when prices are quoted in dollars or euros. FCDO warns that outside major towns you may find no ATMs and be unable to use cards. Money in Georgia

  5. Dress modestly for churches and rural towns

FCDO describes Tbilisi as cosmopolitan but notes more conservative attitudes in rural areas, especially in places of worship. Cover shoulders and knees for monasteries from Mtskheta to Gelati.

Georgia FAQ

Do I need a visa for Georgia?

Not on a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German or Spanish passport: the government list allows a stay of one full year. Check your own passport in the visa checker. Working there, even remotely, needs a work permit.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Georgia?

Yes, for tourists since 1 January 2026. The foreign ministry exempts only diplomatic and special passport holders, accredited diplomats, treaty-based entries and international drivers, so keep your policy as a PDF on your phone.

Is Georgia in the EU or the Schengen area?

No. Georgia is outside both, so its days do not count toward your Schengen 90, and the EU Entry/Exit System does not apply at Georgian borders. You pass Georgian passport control and may be asked for your insurance.

How many days do you need in Georgia?

Five days cover Tbilisi, a Kakheti or Sighnaghi day and a night in Stepantsminda. A week adds Kutaisi or Batumi. Svaneti and Tusheti are separate trips of several days, so choose one valley.

When is the best time to visit Georgia?

May, June, September and October. High valleys suit June to September, Tusheti is open June to October, and the Kakheti grape harvest runs through September and October.
