Sighnaghi is a small hill town in Kakheti, the wine region of eastern Georgia, a few hours' drive east of Tbilisi. Much of the 18th-century fortress wall still runs around the old center, where red-roofed houses line steep streets. From the top of the town, you can look out over the Alazani Valley toward the Caucasus mountains on clear days.

People come for the wall, the valley views and the wine. Kakheti is one of Georgia's main winemaking areas, so a winery visit makes a natural half-day plan. Bodbe Monastery, where St. Nino is buried, is a short drive away. Spring and early autumn suit a visit best, when the weather is mild. Plan a day trip from Tbilisi for a quick look, or stay one night to see the town after the day visitors leave.

Sighnaghi FAQ

Is Sighnaghi worth visiting?

Yes, for a walled hill town with views over the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus, plus winery lunches. It is small, so a half day or one night is enough unless you add Bodbe and other Kakheti stops.

How far is Sighnaghi from Tbilisi?

Georgia Travel gives 1 h 40 min by road, so it works as a day trip. Hired drivers and tours also run; check the details and the return time with the operator.

How many days do you need in Sighnaghi?

A half day covers the walls, the museum and a tasting. Stay one night for the evening on the valley and a slower dinner. Add a second night only if you plan Telavi, Tsinandali or Bodbe at an easy pace.

Can you drive to Sighnaghi after wine tasting?

No. FCDO notes severe drink-driving punishments and a lower alcohol limit than the UK, and advises avoiding alcohol if you drive. Book a driver or tour, or stay overnight.

What should you know before visiting Davit Gareja?

Georgia Travel places the monastery complex about 70 km east of Tbilisi in Sagarejo Municipality. Read the border note on this page first, and go with a driver or guide who knows the Udabno caves.
