Barrage Vauban

Visit Barrage Vauban in Strasbourg for a free rooftop view of Petite France and the Ponts Couverts, plus sculptures inside its historic dam.

Barrage Vauban is a 17th-century fortified dam and covered bridge over the River Ill, beside Petite France and the Ponts Couverts in Strasbourg. Its rooftop terrace gives you an elevated view of the canals, half-timbered buildings, historic towers and cathedral. Inside, a long passage displays sculptures and other artworks, including statuary connected with Strasbourg Cathedral. Entry is free, so you can pair a look inside with a walk across the terrace. The view is especially atmospheric around dusk, when lights reflect on the water.

A dam built for the city’s defence

Barrage Vauban crosses the River Ill near the southern end of Strasbourg’s historic centre. Built in the late 17th century to plans by military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, it formed part of the city’s defences. The structure also became known as the Great Lock.

In the event of an attack, the dam could control the river’s flow and flood land to the south, making an advance towards the city more difficult. It was both a defensive work and a bridge across the river. Its original military purpose is no longer part of a visit, but the building still gives a sense of how water and fortifications were used to protect Strasbourg.

The passage and its sculptures

A covered corridor runs through the dam between the riverbanks. Today, this interior passage contains artworks and sculptures, including statuary associated with Strasbourg Cathedral. Take a look inside on your way to or from the terrace; the displays provide a quieter counterpoint to the open views above.

The passage is long enough to make the crossing part of the visit, rather than simply a route up to the roof. You can look at the sculptures and notice the stone arches around them. The gallery combines the building’s defensive history with its current use as a place to display art.

Views over Petite France

The rooftop terrace is the main reason to climb to the top. From here, the Ponts Couverts and their towers sit beside the canals, with Petite France’s historic buildings beyond. The Strasbourg Cathedral is visible in the wider city view. The raised position gives you a clear look across the waterways and rooftops that define this part of the city.

Barrage Vauban is close to the Ponts Couverts, making it easy to include both in a walk through Petite France. The terrace is also a useful place to pause for photographs. At dusk and after dark, lighting on the structure and its reflections on the water add another perspective on the bridges and canals.
