Dijon is the prefecture of the Côte-d'Or department in eastern France, about 300 km southeast of Paris. The city sits on a plain drained by the Suzon and Ouche rivers, with vineyard hillsides to the south that give the department its name. Many medieval half-timbered houses from the 12th to 15th centuries survive in the old core, and their roofs of glazed terracotta tiles, called toits bourguignons, form geometric patterns. The Ducal Palace, the Puits de Moïse sculpture and Notre Dame church sit close together and are easy to walk between.

Food and wine are the other draw. Dijon mustard is the best-known product, and crème de cassis, a blackcurrant liqueur, is the base of the kir. The wine villages of the Côte de Nuits, including Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, are within about 20 minutes of the city centre. Winters are cool to cold, and summers are warm to hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms. The TGV from Paris takes about one hour and 40 minutes.

Dijon FAQ

Is Dijon worth visiting?

Yes for a short food-and-wine stop. The old center is compact and easy, and the Côte d'Or vineyards start at the edge of town. It is a smaller, calmer city than Lyon or Paris.

How many days do you need in Dijon?

One full day covers the old center, the market and a mustard stop. Add a second day for a vineyard visit or Beaune. A third day is useful only for a longer wine route.

Can you visit Dijon as a day trip from Paris?

Yes, by TGV in under two hours each way, but a day trip leaves little time for the wine villages. An overnight stay lets you visit Beaune or a cellar.

Is Dijon the home of mustard?

Dijon is the name tied to the style of mustard, and several mustard makers and shops are in or near the city. Choose a shop over a supermarket for local jars and flavors.

When is the best time to visit Dijon?

April to June and September to October. Spring is mild, and September brings the grape harvest in the vineyards around town. Winter is cold and quiet but easy on prices.
