Beaune is a small walled town in the Côte-d'Or department of eastern France, at the south end of the Burgundy wine region. Its old town is full of merchant houses and wine cellars, and the Hospices de Beaune, a charitable hospital founded in 1443, is the best-known sight. Its roof is covered in patterned tiles, and the hospice's wine auction is held each November.
Plan at least two nights to see the Hospices, walk the old town and visit a few cellars. Villages of the Côte de Beaune, including Pommard, Volnay and Meursault, are a short drive away, so day trips into the vineyards fit well. September and October bring the grape harvest and the busiest weeks; spring and the quieter weeks outside harvest are calmer. From Paris, take a fast train to Dijon, then a short regional train to Beaune.
