Rab is an island in the Kvarner Gulf, off Croatia's northern Adriatic coast. Its old town, Rab Town, sits on a peninsula, and four bell towers rise above its roofs. The best-known beaches are at Lopar, at the north end of the island, where long stretches of sand run down to the sea.
Rab suits travelers who want a beach stay with a historic town nearby, and families who want sand and an old town on one trip. Car ferries run from the mainland, and seasonal catamaran routes link other Kvarner ports, so check timetables before you book. Rab Town suits walkers who want the bell towers and restaurants on foot, while Lopar suits days spent on the sand. Two or three days covers the old town and a beach day. Late spring and early autumn are quieter than July and August.
Rab Island in five
- Look for the four bell towersRab Town sits on a narrow peninsula bounded by old walls, and its four towers belong to the cathedral and to the churches of St. John the Evangelist, St. Andrew and St. Justine. Seen from the sea they draw a ship with four masts.
- Go to Lopar for sandy beachesThe tourist board says Paradise Beach at Lopar is almost 2 km long, holds a Blue Flag and has beach volleyball, aquaparks and parties. A quieter southern stretch is set aside for dogs.
- Pick the ferry by the side you wantThe tourist board lists two ferry lines: Stinica to Mišnjak from the mainland coast, and Valbiska on Krk to Lopar. Check the timetable for your date and book vehicle space ahead in summer.
- Link Rab with Pag and Rijeka by seaRab sits on one long catamaran line that also calls at Veli Lošinj, Novalja and Silba between Rijeka and Zadar, and a passenger boat adds a hop to Lun on Pag.Pag Island
- Walk through Komrčar ParkThe wooded park beyond the old town has paths that wind down to the beaches, and it gives shade on a hot day without needing a car or a boat.

How do you get to Rab island?
Take the Stinica to Mišnjak ferry from the mainland coast, the Valbiska to Lopar ferry from Krk, or the catamaran from Rijeka or Novalja. A car is only needed if you want to cover the island by road.
Is Rab a good island for families?
Yes, because Lopar has long sandy beaches with facilities, which is rare on the Croatian coast. Rab Town adds shaded lanes, a park and short distances between the sights.
How many days do you need on Rab?
Two days cover the old town and a beach day at Lopar. Three or four days suit a family stay with a boat trip or a visit to Pag. One day works only as a stop from Rijeka.
Is Rab Town or Lopar better to stay in?
Rab Town for the walled old town and evenings, Lopar for sand, aquaparks and a beach-first week. A car or a bus makes it easy to switch between them.
Does Rab have sandy beaches?
Yes. Lopar is the sandy area, and Paradise Beach is the largest, almost 2 km long and Blue Flag awarded. Most other beaches on the island are rocky or pebbly.
