Krk is the largest island in Croatia's Kvarner Gulf, a short distance off the mainland coast near Rijeka. A road bridge links it to the mainland, so you can drive onto the island without a ferry. Rijeka Airport sits on the island, which makes it a practical arrival point. It is sometimes called the Golden Island of Kvarner.
The draw is the stone towns and the sea. Krk town has an old centre of narrow stone streets above its harbour. Baška has a long pebble beach on its bay. Vrbnik sits on a cliff above the water and is known for its local wine. Summer is the busiest season for swimming, while late spring and early autumn are milder and quieter. Plan at least three nights to see the towns and a beach. A week leaves room for a day trip by ferry to Cres.
