Pag is a long, bare island in the Adriatic, off the Zadar coast in Zadar County. Its land is mostly limestone with few trees, so the scenery is open and dry, and the wind keeps the low vegetation short. Pag is known for sheep's-milk cheese, traditional lace and the salt pans near Pag town. At the north end of the island, the club beach of Zrće sits near Novalja.

Pag suits road trips along the coast between Zadar and the Kvarner region, and it fits into a few days of a longer Croatia route. The Pag Bridge links the island to the mainland. The first decision is where to base yourself. Pag town is quieter and close to the salt pans. Novalja is nearer to Zrće. Summer is the busy season, while late spring and early autumn are calmer. Plan at least a few days to see the main points.

Pag Island in five

  1. Drive over the Pag BridgeThe Pag Bridge, 301 m long and open since 1968, joins the island to the mainland, with the Prizna to Žigljen ferry as the alternative. Zadar to Novalja is 76 km by road according to Novalja's tourist board.Zadar
  2. Taste cheese from local sheepPag cheese is made from the milk of the island's own sheep and is one of the best-known food products in Croatia. Buy it at a farm or a shop that names its producer, and ask how long it was aged.
  3. See lace in Pag townCroatian lacemaking, including Pag lace, is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, and the old town is where lace is made and sold. The salt pans, among the oldest on the eastern Adriatic, give the other local story.
  4. Choose Zrće only for party nightsZrće beach near Novalja is the island's club beach, with parties that run into the early morning. Families and travelers who want quiet do better in Pag town or a smaller village.
  5. Link Pag and Rab without a carNovalja's tourist board lists a catamaran north to Rab and Rijeka, and a passenger boat from Lun to Rab. Both suit a trip without a car.Rab Island

Pag Island FAQ

Is Pag island worth visiting?

Yes for the landscape, cheese, lace and salt pans, and for Zrće if you want a beach club. It is a poor fit for travelers who want sand, shade or forest, since the island is bare.

How do you get to Pag island?

Drive over the Pag Bridge, take the Prizna to Žigljen ferry from the north, or ride the catamaran from Rijeka via Rab to Novalja. Buses also run from Zagreb, Rijeka, Zadar and Split to Novalja.

Is Pag a good day trip from Zadar?

It works with a car: Zadar to Novalja is 76 km. Pag town sits nearer the bridge, so a day for the town, the cheese and the salt pans is realistic. Allow an overnight for Zrće.

What is Pag known for?

Pag cheese, Pag lace, lamb, salt and the Zrće beach. The cheese is made from the milk of the island's sheep, and Croatian lacemaking, including Pag lace, is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.

Where should you stay on Pag?

Pag town for lace, salt and a quieter evening, Novalja for beaches and restaurants, and Zrće only if you want the clubs. A village stay suits travelers who want quiet and a car.
