Cameroon is a Central African country on the Gulf of Guinea. Yaoundé is the political capital, and Douala is the economic capital and main seaport. The country borders Nigeria, Chad, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo. It is nicknamed Africa in miniature for its coast, desert, mountains, rainforest and savanna.
Mount Cameroon, a volcano in the Southwest Region, is the country's highest point at about 4,095 metres. Limbé sits at its foot, and Kribi is another coastal resort. Waza National Park and Lobéké National Park are two of the country's three UNESCO natural World Heritage sites. Dry months differ by zone: December to February in the south and November to April in the north. Only about 6,000 of the country's 50,000 km of roads are paved, so plan extra time for long journeys.
Five things to know before Cameroon
- Apply for the e-Visa in good time
UK passport holders need a visa, applied for on the official e-Visa portal. The UK notes technical problems, so apply early. Road or sea arrivals need a physical visa from an embassy; none are issued at airports on arrival. Cameroon e-Visa portal
- Carry your yellow fever certificate
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Cameroon. Keep the original with your passport.
- Check the regions to avoid before planning
The UK advises against all travel to the North-West and most of the South-West and Far North regions, and near the Nigeria, Chad and CAR borders. UK travel advice
- Base yourself on the southern coast
Kribi's beaches and the Lobé Falls, plus Douala and Yaoundé, are where most visits focus. Hire a driver for road trips between them.
- Carry your passport at checkpoints
Police checks are frequent on the roads. Carry your passport or a certified copy, and keep calm and polite at checkpoints.

Cameroon FAQ
Do I need a visa for Cameroon?
UK passport holders do. Apply on the official e-Visa portal well before you travel; road and sea arrivals need an embassy visa. Check the rule for other passports on the portal.
Is Cameroon safe to visit?
Governments advise against travel to large parts of the north and the English-speaking North-West and South-West regions. The southern coast and main cities are where most visits go; read the current advice.
When is the best time to visit Cameroon?
December to February, the main dry season in the south. There is a shorter drier spell in July and August.
Can I climb Mount Cameroon?
The mountain is in the South-West region, where the UK advises against travel outside Limbé and the N3 road. Check the current advice before planning a climb.
What languages are spoken in Cameroon?
French and English are official. French dominates in Douala, Yaoundé and Kribi, so a few phrases help.
