Kribi is a coastal town in Cameroon's South region, on the Gulf of Guinea, where the Lobé River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is the chief town of Océan Department. Visitors come for long white-sand beaches and seafood restaurants, and the town has long drawn residents of Yaoundé and Douala as a seaside resort. It lies roughly 150 km by road south of Douala, the country's largest city and busiest seaport, which has the international airport.

The Lobé Waterfalls sit about 7 km from town, where a river falls directly into the sea. Inland, the road through the Littoral Evergreen Forest leads toward Bipindi and Lolodorf. Kribi fits a relaxed beach stay or a few days of seafood and sea views. The climate has a short, fairly dry season and a long, very wet one. December is the driest month, with about 59 mm of rain, and September the wettest, with about 483 mm. Humidity stays high all year, so pack for heat and moisture.

Kribi in five

  1. Ask locally before you swim at the main beachA January 2024 study found parasitic worm eggs and larvae in waters along Kribi's famous beach, likely from human waste. Ask locally which stretches are considered clean before you swim.
  2. Hire a badged local guide at the fallsMany sites are run informally by young local guides. Since 2013 the tourism ministry has issued badges to identify official tourist guides, so ask to see one before you pay.
  3. Fly into Douala and drive southDouala has the international airport, and Kribi is roughly 150 km south by road. The route is National Road 7 from Edéa, so plan your transfer before you land.Getting around
