Limbe is a coastal town in Cameroon's Southwest Region, on the Atlantic at the foot of Mount Cameroon, the highest peak in West and Central Africa. The town was called Victoria in the German colonial period, and its botanic garden dates from that time. The beaches have dark sand made from volcanic rock, so they look nothing like the pale sand of many Atlantic beaches.
Most travelers come for the Limbe Botanic Garden, the Limbe Wildlife Centre, which cares for rescued primates, and a few days by the sea. The mountain climb takes several days, so treat it as a separate part of the trip. Limbe suits travelers who want a slow coastal base with a few set sights. The dry season, roughly December to February, is the easiest time to visit. Two or three nights is enough for the town's main sights, and a week leaves room for the mountain.

- Get a visa before you flyMost nationalities need a visa for Cameroon. Apply through a Cameroonian embassy or consulate before you buy flights, and check the current process on the official government site first.Visas and entry
- Carry CFA francs in small notesCard payments are rare outside hotels and a few shops, so take enough XAF for taxis, bendskins and meals. Take small notes, since drivers may not have change for large ones.
- Hire a guide for Mount CameroonThe volcano is a long, steep climb, and the weather on the upper slopes can change quickly. Go with a local guide, check the park rules at the office in Buea, and pack warm layers for the summit.
- Set up MTN or Orange dataMTN and Orange are the main mobile networks, and signal is usable in town. It drops on the mountain and in villages, so download offline maps before you leave Limbe.Phones and eSIM
- Check your insurance covers the mountainSome policies exclude trekking above a set altitude, so confirm that mountain climbs and emergency evacuation are included. Keep the policy number and the insurer's phone number on paper.Travel insurance

Read the guideLimbe FAQ
Is Limbe worth visiting?
Yes if you want the sea, the black sand beaches and the Botanic Garden at a slow pace. It is a small coastal town, so plan two or three days rather than a single quick stop.
How do you get from Douala to Limbe?
Shared taxis and hired cars run the road from Douala through Tiko. The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Agree the fare before you get in, or ask your lodging to arrange a car.
How hard is the climb up Mount Cameroon?
It is a long, steep volcanic climb, and most climbs take several days, so plan around the route and guide you choose. Go with a local guide and warm layers, and check the park rules before you start.
When is the best time to visit Limbe?
December to February is the driest stretch. The rainy months, roughly June to October, bring heavy downpours and muddy trails.
Can you swim at the black sand beaches?
Surf is often strong and lifeguards are not guaranteed, so ask locally before you swim. Stay in shallow water and swim where other people are.
Do you need a car in Limbe?
Not for the town itself. Bendskins and shared taxis cover short trips, and a hired driver is useful for Buea and the mountain.
