Espaço Carybé de Artes - Forte de São Diogo
Landmark

Espaço Carybé de Artes - Forte de São Diogo

See Carybé’s digital art gallery inside Forte de São Diogo in Salvador, then take in views of the bay from this restored historic fort.

Espaço Carybé de Artes is a small art exhibition inside Forte de São Diogo, on Morro de Santo Antônio beside Porto da Barra beach in Salvador. Its digital gallery presents works by Carybé, whose paintings and graphic art depict Bahian life and culture, including Candomblé imagery. The restored fort was built to defend the entrance to Todos os Santos Bay; from the site, you can look out over the bay and Salvador’s coastline. The exhibition is compact, so it fits easily between time at the beach and other nearby sights.

Forte de São Diogo stands on Morro de Santo Antônio, beside Porto da Barra beach. It was built at the end of the 16th century and later enlarged to help defend the entrance to Todos os Santos Bay. The harbor was a vulnerable approach to the city from the south, which gave the fort its strategic purpose.

Today, the restored building houses the Espaço Carybé de Artes. The exhibition is small, and the fort’s position provides a view across the bay and Salvador’s coastline. The building is free to enter, but admission is charged for the art exhibition.

The gallery is dedicated to Carybé, an Argentine-born artist whose work became closely associated with Bahia. A digital collection presents paintings and graphic works inspired by the region’s life and culture, including imagery connected to Candomblé. The interactive displays introduce his work and artistic life; allow time to look closely at the images rather than treating the exhibition as a quick pass-through.

Photography is not allowed inside. The shop is small and carries original works and signed prints, which are available to buy as souvenirs.

Fitting the visit into Porto da Barra

Forte de São Diogo is a short historical stop beside the beach. Its location makes it practical to combine the gallery with time at Porto da Barra or a walk along the route toward Forte de Santa Maria, which passes viewpoints and restaurants. The fort’s elevated setting gives a different perspective on the coastline and the bay it once helped protect.

For a quieter look at the exhibition, arrive early in the day. The gallery is closed on Tuesdays and open on the other days from 9 am to 5 pm.
