Salvador is the capital of Bahia, a state in northeastern Brazil, and the country's first colonial capital. It sits on a peninsula between the Bay of All Saints and the Atlantic Ocean, built on two levels: the Upper Town (Cidade Alta) for government and churches, and the Lower Town (Cidade Baixa) for the port and trade, about 85 meters apart. The Lacerda Elevator links them and has run since 1873, taking about 22 seconds per ride.

Go for the Afro-Brazilian culture, which is strongest here: music, capoeira, Candomblé and seafood cooked with dendê palm oil, such as moqueca and acarajé. The Historic Center, including Pelourinho, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 1985, with 17th and 18th century churches, palaces and convents. The climate is tropical with little change through the year, averaging about 26°C. December and January are the driest months and April to June the wettest. Plan three or four days for the old town, a beach and a boat trip to the islands.

Salvador in five

  1. Ride the Lacerda Elevator between the two townsThe elevator links the upper old town with the lower town and the Mercado Modelo in under a minute. The fare is small.
  2. See the Pelourinho by dayThe old town is lively by day and on event nights, and quiet on side streets after dark. Use ride apps between neighborhoods at night.
  3. Take the metro from the airportMetro Line 2 runs from the airport station toward the city. It avoids the worst of the road traffic.
  4. Try acarajé from a street stallBlack-eyed pea fritters fried in dendê oil, sold by baianas in white dresses. Ask for it without pepper if you do not like heat.

Salvador FAQ

Is Salvador safe for tourists?

Take the usual big-city care. Stay in the main streets of the Pelourinho by day, use ride apps at night, and keep phones and cameras out of sight.

When is the rainy season in Salvador?

Roughly April to July, with May usually the wettest. It stays warm, and rain often comes in bursts.

When is Carnival in Salvador?

In February or early March, set by the date of Easter. It is one of Brazil's biggest street carnivals, so book rooms months ahead.

How many days do you need in Salvador?

Three days cover the Pelourinho, the lower town and a beach afternoon. Add two nights if you want Morro de São Paulo or Praia do Forte, which both work better with an overnight.

How do you get to Morro de São Paulo from Salvador?

A catamaran from the terminal near the Mercado Modelo takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, and ferries and road routes take longer. Book ahead in January and over holidays; the sea can be rough.
