Catedral Metropolitana de Porto Alegre

Visit Porto Alegre’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Centro Histórico to see its Renaissance Revival façade, stained glass, marble altars and painted ceiling.

In Porto Alegre’s Centro Histórico, the Metropolitan Cathedral faces Praça Marechal Deodoro, also known as Praça da Matriz. Its Renaissance Revival exterior is marked by three entrance portals and twin bell towers; inside, stained glass, marble altars and a painted ceiling reward a quiet look around. A short stop works well alongside the square’s other historic buildings. Visit during Mass if you want to experience the cathedral as a place of worship, or come outside the service for prayer and reflection.

Catedral Metropolitana de Porto Alegre

The Metropolitan Cathedral stands on Praça Marechal Deodoro, known locally as Praça da Matriz, in Porto Alegre’s Centro Histórico. It replaced an 18th-century church on the same site. The cathedral and the former government palace were among the first buildings on the square.

From outside, look for the three entrance portals and the pair of bell towers. The façade’s mosaic panels were made in Vatican ateliers. The cathedral’s architecture combines Italian Renaissance influences with towers inspired by 17th-century Jesuit missions.

Inside the cathedral

Inside, stained-glass windows, marble altars and a painted ceiling give the interior its main points of interest. The tall ceilings add to the sense of space. Allow about 15 minutes for a brief visit, or stay longer for prayer or reflection.

This is an active place of worship. A visit during Mass gives you the chance to experience a service; some services include individual blessings for the congregation. Keep the service and those attending in mind as you explore.

Planning a visit in Centro Histórico

The cathedral is an easy stop on a walk through the historic center. Nearby points of interest include Praça da Alfândega, the Public Market, MARGS and Theatro São Pedro. You can also combine the square with other historic buildings in the area.

If you are interested in attending Mass, check the cathedral’s current service information before setting out. Weekend services may include refreshments afterward, but confirm locally.
