Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil. The city sits on the shore of Lake Guaíba, a wide freshwater lake where several rivers meet, and has about 1.3 million residents. Visitors come for gaúcho food and the waterfront. The Mercado Público, a historic covered market in the center, is where locals buy fresh produce and sit down to eat. Locals also drink chimarrão, a bitter herb tea shared from one gourd.
Two or three days is enough for the city. Spend a morning on the waterfront, where the old Usina do Gasômetro power station now hosts cultural events, and an afternoon in Parque Farroupilha, locally called Redenção. The city suits travelers who want food, walking, museums and an unhurried pace, and it is a good base for day trips to the wine and mountain country of the state. Summer is hot and humid, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. February brings Carnival.
