Trebinje is a city in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the East Herzegovina region. It sits beside the Trebišnjica River, below Leotar Mountain and about 30 km by road from Dubrovnik, Croatia. The walled Old Town, also called Stari Grad or Kastel, is its historic core, with Ottoman-era walls, a square and stone buildings. About 1 km north of the town centre, the 16th-century Arslanagić Bridge is also known as Perovića Bridge. Trebinje is nicknamed the city of the sun and plane-trees.

In the centre, visit the Ottoman-era mosque and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Birth of Mary. On Crkvina Hill above the city are the Serbian Orthodox cathedral and Hercegovačka Gračanica monastery. Tvrdoš Monastery is about 2 km southwest of Trebinje; Duži Monastery is about 10 km west. The Trebišnjica floods every winter, and the region has a humid subtropical climate with heavy precipitation. Music & More SummerFest runs for about two weeks in August, with venues including Amphitheater Crkvina and the Museum of Herzegovina. These sights give you a mix of Ottoman architecture, religious sites and river scenery to explore in and around the city.

  2. Walk the old town and the green marketThe Trebinje tourist board points to the Kastel old town with the Osman-Pasha and Emperor mosques from the 18th century, and the green market under plane trees on Freedom Square.
  3. Go up to Hercegovačka Gračanica near sunsetThe regional tourist board calls the Crkvina hill the best view of Trebinje, and it holds the church and the tomb of the poet Jovan Dučić.
  4. See the bridge that was movedThe Perović or Arslanagić bridge was built in 1574 by Sokollu Mehmed Pasha and moved in 1966 when the Trebišnjica hydro system flooded its site. It now stands between the Gradina and Police quarters.
  5. Taste Žilavka and Vranac at a wineryThe regional tourist board names Žilavka and Vranac as local wines and lists Tvrdoš monastery, 5 km west of town, among places with a long winemaking tradition.
