Mostar is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, set along the Neretva River. Its best-known landmark, the Old Bridge, was built in the 16th century during Ottoman rule. The bridge was destroyed during the 1990s conflict and rebuilt in 2004. It connects parts of the historic center, where stone lanes and the old bazaar make a walk through the city a natural way to explore. The river and bridge are central to a visit, with the surrounding streets giving you more to see on foot.

You can visit Mostar on a day trip or stay overnight to spend more time in the historic center. The center is compact, though the approach to the bridge is steep in places. Allow time to cross the bridge and explore the streets on both sides. Mostar’s history is present in the rebuilt landmark and the older architecture around it. If you are planning a regional itinerary, decide whether a short visit is enough for your interests or whether you want a slower walk through the center.

Mostar FAQ

Is Mostar worth visiting?

Yes for the Old Bridge, the bazaar lanes and the setting on the Neretva. It is small, so one day covers the sights and a night adds the quiet hours.

Is Mostar a good day trip from Sarajevo?

It works if you leave early. The road is 130 km and trains call at Mostar on the Sarajevo to Čapljina line. A single day leaves little room for the evening, so many travelers stay a night.

How much time do you need in Mostar?

About half a day for the bridge, the Tara tower museum and the bazaar, a full day with a meal and a slow walk, and two days with Blagaj and Počitelj.

When is the Old Bridge Museum open?

The Herzegovina Museum lists the Old Bridge department as open 10:00 to 18:00 daily from 1 April to 1 November, with organized visits in other months. Check its page before a winter trip.

Is Mostar safe to walk at night?

The old town is a normal tourist area. The UK government advises care with pickpockets in tourist areas and staying on paved roads in the countryside because of old landmines.
