Bruges is the capital of West Flanders in northwest Belgium. Its oval historic center covers about 430 hectares and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The city grew into a major trading port, with merchants arriving from across Europe. Trade declined after the Zwin inlet silted up around 1500, but Bruges later became an early tourist destination. Dutch, in its West Flemish form, is the main language.
The 13th-century Belfry has a carillon of 47 bells and is one of the city’s best-known landmarks. The Church of Our Lady has a 115.6-metre brick spire and a Madonna and Child sculpture by Michelangelo. At the Groeningemuseum, you can see medieval and early modern art, including works by Jan van Eyck. Other options include the Ten Wijngaerde Beguinage, preserved city gates and the city’s 13 historical museums. De Halve Maan brews Brugse Zot and Brugse Straffe Hendrik in Bruges. The city has mild temperatures and rain in every season.
Bruges in five
- Stay one nightMost visitors come for the day from Brussels or a cruise port. After 5pm and before 10am the Markt and the canals are calm.
- Climb the belfry earlyThe tower admits a limited number of people at a time and its 366 steps are narrow. In summer, go at opening and check the official site for current ticketing.
- Take a canal boatBoats leave from several jetties in the center for about half an hour on the water. Lines are shortest early and in the evening.
- Walk to the windmillsThe ramparts on the east side of town have a row of windmills and far fewer people than the Markt.
- Cycle to DammeA flat, tree-lined canal path leads north to the village of Damme, and bikes are easy to rent near the station.

Is one day in Bruges enough?
One day covers the main sights, but you share them with the day visitors. One night gives you the quiet evening and morning.
How far is Bruges from Brussels?
About an hour by direct train, with several departures an hour. The station is about 20 minutes on foot from the Markt.
Do I need to book the Bruges belfry?
In busy months, yes. The tower lets in a limited number of people per time slot, and walk-up slots can go by midday.
What is the best month to visit Bruges?
May, June and September give mild weather with long days, while December brings Christmas markets and the heaviest crowds. Weekdays and early mornings are quieter in every month.
Is Bruges too touristy?
The Markt and the canals fill from late morning to late afternoon. Stay overnight, walk toward the ramparts and the quieter streets, and go early or late to see a calmer town.
