Bonne Chieremolen

Visit Bonne Chieremolen on Bruges’s Kruisvest to see a rebuilt 1911 windmill, stroll by the canal and look towards the city centre.

Bonne Chieremolen is a windmill on the Kruisvest, beside the canal on Bruges’s northeastern edge. You can walk up close to the mill and see the other historic windmills along this stretch of park. From the rampart, look back towards the towers and monuments in the city centre, or follow the canal for a quieter stroll. The mill was rebuilt in 1911 and was made for decoration, not for grinding grain. A picnic area and green space sit nearby.

Bonne Chieremolen stands on the northeastern side of Bruges’s historic centre, along the Kruisvest park and the canal that circles the city. It is the first of four windmills in the line when approaching from Kruispoort Gate. The other mills along this stretch are Sint-Janshuismolen, Nieuwe Papegaai and Koeleweimolen.

The mill was rebuilt in 1911 and was made for decoration rather than for grinding grain. It is one of the historic windmills preserved around Bruges, and you can view it at close range from the path.

A visit can be part of a walk from the city centre or a longer stroll along the canal. The rampart gives you a view back towards the towers and monuments in central Bruges; from lower down, you can frame the full mill in a photograph. The green space beside it includes a picnic area.

For photos, afternoon light falls behind you, with the mill against the sky. The path near the top has a drop, so take care with children there. You can also approach the Kruisvest by bike from Kruispoort Gate.
